March 2013 NEWS!

CHAINFREE BRISTOL BUILDS FENCE FOR 40th DOG!

This month a Chainfree Bristol volunteer identified a residence in Bristol TN where 5 dogs were living in poor conditions. These unfortunate creatures were either chained or housed in a small wire feces-filled kennel.  Recent rains offered little dry ground and lots of mud.

A large fenced enclosure was promptly planned by Chainfree Bristol.  Problem was that all five dogs were not altered. So with the co-operation of the pet owners and support from Holly Help, the Margaret B. Mitchell Clinic, the Animal Defense league of Abingdon, Carole, Diana and Chainfree Bristol all five were spayed  or neutered. This month their new, roomy fenced enclosure was completed by Chainfree Bristol!ol.

Dusty, a skinny,  but loveable Boxer, was found with a chain for a collar and attached to a stake in the ground by a too short chain. One of our Chainfree Bristol volunteers fell in love with Dusty and the pet owner agreed to allow Dusty to be re-homed.  Dusty now lives in Johnson City with owners where Dusty is an inside dog. :)

Pixie (11 months old) and Little Buck (about 2) were both CKC Schnauzers sharing a small wire feces-filled kennel.                                                                                    Note theirmuddy paws and need for grooming!

The fourth dog is Tramp, a 2 year old, male, Chihuahua/Schauzer mix. He and Flash, an 8 yearar old, blind, Puggle were usually chained as well.

Earlier in March, Chainfree Bristol built a very large fenced enclosure for Dusty, Pixie, Little Buck and Flash. And with Dusty getting re-homed... that makes 40 dogs Chainfree Bristol volunteers have  released from their perpetual restraints. Thanks to volunteers on this project including Eden, Les, Pete, Jenni, Doug, Helene, Shea, Jake, Diana, Anita and especially to Joe and Connie for delivering hot pizza and sweet encouragement!

This month Chainfree Bristol founder, Liza Conway,

made another formal request of City Council to re-evaluate the current animal chaining ordinance and other related animal care laws.  In her presentation , Liza told council, “...Tax dollars should be spent to improve the image of Bristol… to improve our neighborhoods. Tax dollars should not be used to allow animal abuse and neglect to continue in the form  of a dog living every second of its life until it dies at the end of a 12’ chain”.

And, “The time has come to make Bristol be a shining example to our region on the proper way to care for a dog… the time has come to have a complete ordinance, a dog chaining ordinance that is ahead of the regional curve. The time is now to ban the lifetime, unattended chaining of dogs.”

Contact our City Officials and recommend to them that Bristol needs stronger  animal care ordinances including a ban ON THE LIFETIME, UNATTENDED CHAINING OF DOGS!
